Chinese Heritage Material Lab
The value of Chinese craft lies not only in its visual language, but in the material knowledge embedded in how things are made. At TECHIC, we study traditional processes and translate their principles into contemporary materials, surfaces and product experiences.

Craft Research + Process Decoding
TECHIC has established a growing knowledge base through research into 16 Chinese crafts and collaboration with craftspeople, material specialists and manufacturing partners. We document not only the final appearance of a craft, but also how its color, texture, structure and variation emerge through the making process.
By decoding these processes, we identify the material principles that can be carried forward. This allows us to move beyond cultural symbolism and understand which elements can be adapted, recombined or developed for contemporary product contexts.

From Craft Knowledge to Material Development
Traditional making often depends on tacit knowledge, manual variation and locally specific materials. We work to translate these qualities into material families, surface systems and process directions that retain their character while responding to modern requirements.
Through experimentation with materials, manufacturing processes and supply chain partners, we develop samples and application concepts while exploring greater consistency, repeatability and feasible production pathways. The aim is not to reproduce craft mechanically, but to create new materials that carry its underlying intelligence.

Contemporary Applications
Our heritage material research can support automotive interiors, premium consumer products, lifestyle and home products, limited editions and bespoke brand experiences. Projects may range from a focused material collection to the development of a distinctive surface or an integrated CMF direction.
We work with CMF, advanced design and brand teams to connect cultural research with material development and product application. This creates opportunities for expressions that are recognisably Chinese without relying on familiar motifs, bringing Chinese craftsmanship into dialogue with contemporary technology, manufacturing and global ideas of quality.

Our work is not about placing traditional patterns onto modern products. It begins with the materials, tools, techniques and making logic behind each craft, exploring how this knowledge can inspire new material systems and more authentic forms of Chinese expression.
